Back in the day, cheap wooden sheds were about the only choice if you needed backyard storage. They came with several variations of wood siding including T111, board and batten and then later DuraTemp siding. But all required plenty of maintenance, the minimum of which was keeping the paint on the wooden sheds fresh. On average, the labor costs of building a shed average around $70 an hour, or around half the total cost to build a custom shed - $3,000 for a 10’ x 12’ wooden shed. For a kit, expect to pay a fee of $100 to $500, depending on how complex it is to assemble. When contracting with a shed building company, they supply all the materials and labor and, in many instances, build all or most of the shed off-site, then deliver it to your property for finishing.
For example, while a 10’ x 12’ shed costs around $6,000 for a basic structure with a gable roof, it could cost less with a flat roof. Or if you wanted a much taller, two-story shed, it could be the same as the 16’ x 20’ shed cost because you need to add stairs, an extra floor, and more material.
PopularMechnics has plans for pretty much everything you can build for the house and around the house. Therefore, a properly engineered firewood shed couldn’t miss from the list. You can use this shed for storing firewood and small logs so you can dry them and be ready for the cold season. The lean to roof makes this structure easy to build and the front and back openings lets the air flow to dry the wood quickly. MORE >>
Hi Brittany, very good and inspiring plan. I built it with some modifications of my own, and about a quarter of it is reclaimed or repurposed wood. Mine’s the same depth but 8′ long and with roof 9′ long as shingles come in 3′ lengths. I went up a foot higher than yours and reversed the slope of the roof as mine is next to garage wall. Also, I used deck screws instead of nails and handled the footings a little differently. I’d send you pics but don’t see how to. Recommendation: tell folks to make their cuts in the tallest 4×4 before assembling the shed; much easier and safer that way. Regards, Wayne
